Luis Hernández Vázquez

He emigrated to the United States in 1997 after serving five years of a nine‑year prison sentence in Cuba for “offenses against state security” tied to peaceful political expression, including displaying signs that read “Down with Communism” and “Down with the Castros.” During his imprisonment, he learned English and experienced a profound Christian conversion through evangelical study and discipleship, an awakening that helped shape a life marked by perseverance and faith.
After arriving in Miami, Florida, he faced significant hardship, yet pressed forward, pursuing theological education at Florida Christian College. In 1999, he continued his studies at Carolina Christian College in North Carolina while simultaneously serving as a Christian minister in Winston‑Salem, Burlington, and Bath. He graduated in 2003, continuing a path of service rooted in faith and community.
He later became a certified community and medical interpreter. Now serving as a CEO, he trains interpreters and equips healthcare providers with culturally appropriate Spanish communication, strengthening patient care and expanding meaningful language access for families who need to be heard and understood.
His commitment to civic engagement has remained strong. He has been active in pro‑life advocacy with the Susan B.
