RNC STATEMENT ON SEPTEMBER CONSUMER PRICE INDEX

WASHINGTON D.C. - Today, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel released the following statement after the Consumer Price Index rose again in September:

"Prices are rising, real wages are down, and Americans are struggling to get back to work – all hallmarks of Joe Biden's Build Back Broke agenda. With consumer prices rising higher than expected and families facing the highest inflation rate in over 13 years, there could not be a worse possible time for Biden and Democrats’ trillions in reckless tax hikes and spending.”

Background:

  • Consumer prices spiked by 5.4 percent over the last year, putting a dent in the pocketbooks and wallets of Americans across the country.
    • This was higher than economists expected, rising at the fastest rate in 13 years.
    • Groceries are more expensive, with Americans seeing higher prices year-over-year for kitchen staples like eggs (12.6 percent), chicken (7.6 percent), and fresh fruit (5.0 percent).
  • Rapidly rising prices for everyday goods have completely swamped any wage growth, with real wages decreasing 0.8 percent over the past year.
