Durham Mayor Receives Refugees from Afghanistan

Many agree that it was the Biden Administration’s complete disregard for American lives that led to the deaths of 13 members of our military and the abandonment of thousands of Americans in Afghanistan.

Well, the people of Durham are seeing the same lack of concern from their Mayor Steven Schewel. Earlier this week, the Democrat Mayor announced that the City of Durham would receive 100 to 250 Afghan refugees into the Bull City.

“We will make a home for them here," he said. "No matter what your religion, no matter where you're from, no matter what your race, no matter what language you speak, we want you here in Durham, and we'll embrace you.”

Governor Cooper has not released a statement regarding this matter. However, the actions of his administration speak clearly. The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services is working to assist the refugees resettle in Durham. And although Governor Cooper supports resettling of the Afghan people in North Carolina, I believe he intends to allow local officials, like Mayor Schewel, take the heat for it once the news becomes widely known.

This is a very serious situation and deeply concerning for the entire state, especially the people of Durham at this point. And there are many questions that should be answered before agreeing to take any refugees.

Is the mayor going to hold public hearings about the resettlement? Will the people of Durham have a chance to be heard? How do we know that all the refugees are from Afghanistan? Why won’t any of their neighboring countries accept them? Have we asked their neighbors to accept them?

Could there be any be any members of the Taliban or ISIS among them? Did either the mayor or the governor bother to run background checks on the refugees?

Have they been tested for Covid-19 or other diseases? Where are they going to live? And does the mayor of Durham and the city council expect the city’s taxpayers to pay for their food and housing for the rest of their lives? If not, what is their plan?

And finally, Afghanistan has eight official languages including Pashto, Dari, Baluchi, Nuristani, and Arabic. How is anyone going to communicate with them?

The America people witnessed a shameful disregard for the lives of their fellow citizens by Democrats in the federal government. And now, we’re going to see even more of it from Democrats on the local level.
