CHAIRMAN'S CORNER

Ken Raymond, Chairman

Local Businesses are not Obligated to Enforce the Mayor’s Mask Mandate

Can anyone tell me how Mayor Allen Joines intends to enforce his new mask mandate?

Move over Mayor Bill De Blasio. Winston-Salem’s mayor has decided to join the growing number of public servants going rogue with the establishment of his own Covid-19 mandates due to go in effect on Friday, August 20th, at 5:30 p.m.

Under the order, the people of Winston-Salem must wear a mask anytime they are in the presence of other people whether in public or private indoor spaces which includes grocery stores, pharmacies, businesses, restaurants, bars, gyms, and fitness centers. And all of this is, supposedly, to help stop the spread of the “Delta variant” of the Coronavirus.

It’s hard for me to believe that the mayor, and his staff, has thought this through—especially from an enforcement perspective. And it’s not difficult to imagine being at a restaurant and someone seated at a table near individuals with their children, not wearing masks, demand that the waitress or the manager make them wear masks.

These average workers don’t realize it yet, but they’ve just been drafted into the mayors “mask police” force. Obviously, the Winston-Salem Police Department cannot adequately enforce this mandate. Which means that the mayor is calling upon unsworn, untrained, average people to enforce his mandate among other average people.

At a restaurant some mask wearing customer would complain on a non-mask wearing customer and insist that the manager or waitress either make them get a mask or make them leave. The same would happen at bars, fitness centers, and every business within the city limits.

And let’s not forget about our real police officers. Our understaffed, underpaid, and unappreciated police officers will be called upon each time someone’s nosey neighbor sees them not wearing a mask or sees their children not wearing masks. These busybodies will overwhelm the Police Communications Center with frivolous calls and demand that the police respond to private neighborhoods and local businesses if anyone in the mayors new “mask police” refuse to enforce his order.

Those that refuse to comply will deeply resent those that try to force them. Especially if the mask wearers accuse the non-mask wearers of being uncaring science deniers that want to spread the virus and infect as many as possible. And when the name calling starts, God help us all.

With a single stroke of a pen, the mayor has likely created more strife, conflict, and discord among the people of Winston-Salem than anything else in recent history. Additionally, the mayor’s decision will spread the thin ranks of the police department even thinner because they’ll have to respond to complaints from individuals about others that refuse to wear masks.

It’s important for local businesses and workers to know you are not obligated to enforce the mayor’s mask mandate. More than likely that you’ll get a customer that wants you to tell another customer to wear a mask. I encourage you to politely tell that customer that you are not obligated to enforce the mayor’s mask mandate.

You didn’t sign up for that.

The police department, on the other hand, is another story. And we’ll just have to wait and see how this latest burden effects our already undermanned, understaffed, and unappreciated police officers.

VOTER INTEGRITY COMMITTEE

Voter Integrity Committee Sets Goals

The Voter Integrity Committee met Thursday, August 19, 2021 to set goals for 2021 and 2022.  With all committee members in attendance and a special visit from our Chairman, we got to work promptly on a full agenda of election issues.

One of the issues that is facing us as citizens of NC is whether to ask for a full audit of the 2020 election.  The Committee took a position to have a full state audit.  We will be attending a meeting in Alamance County in September to hear experts who attended Mike Lindell's Cyber Symposium.  The theme of the meeting will be "The Vote Trafficking Parable".

Ken Raymond, Chair of the FCGOP was on hand to discuss one of the vendors who the NCSBOE hires to process votes.  ES&S is getting a poor reputation for not being transparent with NC citizens when it comes to information regarding their machines.  Mr. Raymond and the Committee want answers for the lack of transparency.

Other election issues were discussed and ideas were suggested for a future symposium and/or workshop to equip our members to win the ongoing battle for election integrity.

Our guest for our September meeting will be David Goetez.  "Major Dave" has done groundbreaking research into the 2020 election and we look forward to his visit via Zoom.

The Voter Integrity Committee welcomes comments and questions.  Please email me for more information.  [email protected]
