CHAIRMAN'S CORNER

Ken Raymond, Chairman

In Memory of former FCGOP Chairman Bill Miller Sr.

As you all know, former FCGOP Chairman and state senator Bill Miller passed away last week after a long battle with illness. Bill was the longest serving chairman of FCGOP that I’ve known holding the position for eight years. He seceded John “Jack” Stewart in 2001.

I was in my final years as an official “Young Republican” when Bill became chairman. And like many of you, I have a lot of great stories that I can tell about him. But I want to share my favorite “Bill Miller” story with all of you.

It was the 2004 presidential election, and I was running back and forth to our headquarters, on Cloverdale Avenue, picking up candidate yard signs placing them at intersections and on highways throughout the county. During one trip back to headquarters I ran into Bill, and he was upset with me.

We were in the parking lot, and he caught me just as I was getting out of my car. He stopped me before I could get inside, leaned towards me, and said, “Ken, you’ve got to get a cell phone!”

It was during the mid-2000’s when almost everyone had a mobile phone. I, however, was among those that was content to hold onto a landline. But Bill was tired of waiting for me to get home to hear my messages.

Bill wasn’t the first person to tell me that I had to get onboard with the technology of the day. I heard it from co-workers, friends, and family. But when I heard it from Bill, that’s when it made a lasting impression. Because God forbid the loss of a presidential election because of lack of communication.

It was Bill Miller that prompted me to get my first cell phone. Shortly after our conversation, I purchased a cell phone and I’ve had one ever since. Thanks, Bill!

Former FCGOP Chairman Bill Miller Sr.

FCGOP CONVENTION CONVENES IN CLEMMONS

By: Ken Raymond

Excitement, enthusiasm, and hope for our country was on full display during the Forsyth County GOP Convention at the Village Inn Hotel and Events Center in Clemmons last weekend.

During the event, over 100 delegates not only mingled and express their support for candidates for county commissioner, school board, and the General Assembly, but the delegates also heard from republican U.S. Senate candidates Ted Budd and Mark Walker as well as speeches from their local candidates.

“We are facing troubling times as a nation, but you all give me faith that we can overcome anything. Time to put an America First candidate in the Senate and get our country back on track,” Congressman Budd said.

“If we don’t take the message of individualism, hope, opportunity, and prosperity to all of our communities, who’s going to take it to them?” Congressman Walker said.

Earlier that morning, Precinct Organization Chair Zack Watkins reviewed plans to build active, functioning precinct organizations, throughout the county, and Voter Integrity Chair Bob Dorsch led the discussion on how everyone can play a role to protect the ballot this election year.

The delegates also heard from Jonathan Uzategui vice chair of the North Carolina Hispanic Republican Coalition which is dedicated to the communication of conservative values and principles to North Carolina’s Hispanic population.

During the business session, the delegates approved the Plan of Organization, and nominated school board member Dana Caudill-Jones and Toyce Southern for two At-Large seats on the 6th district and state executive committees.
