School Board Candidates Have More to Talk about than Masks

Now that the Democrats think that they’ve taken the issue of mask mandates, in public schools, off the table I’m sure they believe they have a much better chance of surviving the pending Red Wave that promises to wash them from our local school system.

But each of the 17-republican school-board candidates that recently filed to replace them have a lot of issues to bring to the attention of voters. Most notably among them is the recent display of financial incompetence by superintendent Tricia McManus.

This week the Twin City Herald reported that the paychecks of employees of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools weren’t directly deposited into their bank accounts, on Friday March 4th, when they should have been. The response given by McManus and the chief financial officer Andrea Gillus was that “The money is on the way, but it got delayed. The district sent the payroll file to Wells Fargo on Thursday, but for reasons we are still investigating, the files were not released for payment by Wells Fargo until Friday which has caused a delay in the deposits being made.”

This incident follows the more high-profile $16 million miscalculation by McManus’ administration that caused teachers to receive a much smaller pay increase this year. But no one was held accountable for this incident and it’s doubtful that anyone will be held accountable for the delay of paychecks for school employees.

After adjusting to lower paychecks and unexpected late deposits into their accounts, how much confidence do you think school employees have in the current administration? I think it’s safe to say that their confidence is shrinking rapidly. And we all know that there will be no investigation and these types of incidents are likely to continue without any action from the majority of our current school board members.

As mentioned previously, there are 17-republican candidates running to replace the current majority. They must bring this to the attention of Forsyth County voters. And the voters will decide if they want this degree of mismanagement to continue, or do they want a change for the better.
