Vol. 2, No. 37

CHAIRMAN'S CORNER

Ken Raymond, Chairman

FCGOP Celebrates Black History Month!!!
Throughout the month of February, the Forsyth County Republican Party is celebrating Black History Month by teaching historic truth about the connection between the black community and the Republican Party. This information is easily verified, but not taught in public schools for political reasons.
We’ll publish information about the role the GOP played, and continues to play, to establish freedom for black Americans. And finally, we’ll also publish information about the courageous black republican congressmen, and state representatives, as they fought for equality, for newly freed slaves, against Democrat white supremacists and their allies in the Ku Klux Klan.
U.S. Senator Blanche Kelso Bruce

On February 14, 1879, Republican Senator Blanche Kelso Bruce became the first black man to preside over the U. S. Senate.
Senator Bruce, who was born a slave in Virginia, was also the first black man to serve a full term in the U.S. Senate.
After the Civil War, Bruce worked as a steamboat porter along the Mississippi River. During that time, he met Republican leaders that encouraged him to get into politics. He was also appointed Register of the U.S. Treasury by Republican President William McKinley.
Congressman John Roy Lynch, of Mississippi, wrote about Bruce in his autobiography and described him as "...one of the strongest and most influential colored men that our country has ever produced. He was courteous, respectful, dignified, yet bold, outspoken, and aggressive in the advocacy and defense of what he believed to be right. He enjoyed and merited the unlimited confidence of his own people and the respect and favorable opinion of all who had the good fortune to know him without regard to race or politics."
Texas GOP State Chairman Norris Cuney

On May 12, 1846, Norris Wright Cuney was born. Cuney was the chairman of the Texas Republican Party in 1883.
Cuney was also the first black state chairman of a major political party and the second chairman of the Texas Republican Party, since the state party was created.
Cuney, who was born in Hempstead, Texas, also served as alderman on the Galveston City Council and studied law and literature. After the Civil War, Cuney became heavily involved with the Union League, which encouraged former slaves to support the Republican Party.
Between 1883 and 1894, Cuney helped 44 black republicans get elected to the Texas state legislature. That time is still known today as "The Era of Cuney. "
Pastor Henry Highland Garnett

On February 12, 1865, Pastor Henry Highland Garnet preached a sermon in the U.S. Capitol Building.
Pastor Garnet was invited to preach by the Republican-controlled Congress in celebration of the passage of the 13th Amendment and the end of slavery in America.
Pastor Garnet was the first black man to speak in the Capitol Building.
WHERE IS THE PARADE FOR THE WINSTON-SALEM FIRE DEPARTMENT?
By Ken Raymond
This week, the Los Angeles Rams will be honored with a parade in recognition of their Super Bowl victory against the Cincinnati Bengals. Thousands of people will gather and cheer as the Rams become the focus of the entire city for bringing home the Lombardy trophy.
But something else happened during the days that led up to the Super Bowl that deserves even more recognition. Something much more heroic than making a touchdown catch or kicking the game-winning field goal.
Where’s the parade for the Winston-Salem Fire Fighters?
Where’s the celebration for the men and women of the Winston-Salem Fire Department that, quite literally, saved our city? Where’s the recognition of the fact that about 249,000 residents were spared from experiencing a devasting explosion caused by 600 tons of ammonium nitrate from the Weaver Fertilizer Plant?
Matthew Stafford is a great quarterback for the Rams and I’m sure the people of Los Angeles appreciate his hard work. But his leadership, on the field, should not be given greater honor than the leadership we saw from WSFD Chief William Mayo during this crisis. The chief, his staff, and fire fighters on the ground did an outstanding job containing this fire.
This was not a routine event for them. This was nothing like the multiple false alarms or smoked-filled kitchens they respond to daily. This was a crisis of staggering proportion that garnered national attention. And our fire fighters were required to go above and beyond, and they did! And if they didn’t, there’s no doubt that the one-mile evacuation zone that surrounded the plant, would have been much larger and encompassed the entire city.
So far, not a word from Mayor Allen Joines or Governor Roy Cooper about plans to celebrate our fire fighters.
To be fair, it’s still early, but let’s see what happens…or what doesn’t happen.

TARGETED OUTREACH COMMITTEE
FORSYTH COUNTY REPUBLICANS SUPPORT LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AND FIREFIGHTERS
On Valentine's Day the FCGOP thanked our first responders and wished them a Happy Valentine's Day by delivering goodies and thank you cards. Thanks to many generous volunteers, we were able to visit all 6 police stations in the county, the sheriff's office, and 15 fire stations! Volunteers provided amazing snacks including cookies, cake, donuts, bagels, muffins, chocolate-dipped strawberries and more! The officers, firefighters and staff members were very grateful for this tangible sign of support from the community, and it sends a clear message that Forsyth County Republicans stand with our Police.
If you would like to be involved with similar projects in the future, please contact Targeted Outreach Committee Chair Colleen Lopina at [email protected].
