FCGOP Celebrates Black History Month!!!
Throughout the month of February, the Forsyth County Republican Party is celebrating Black History Month by teaching historic truth about the connection between the black community and the Republican Party. This information is easily verified, but not taught in public schools for political reasons.
We’ll publish information about the role the GOP played, and continues to play, to establish freedom for black Americans. And finally, we’ll also publish information about the courageous black republican congressmen, and state representatives, as they fought for equality, for newly freed slaves, against Democrat white supremacists and their allies in the Ku Klux Klan.
Distinguished Black Republicans
Congressmen Joseph Hayne Rainey and Richard Harvey Cain
On February 3, 1875, Republican Congressmen Joseph Hayne Rainey and Richard Harvey Cain responded to Democrat Congressman Joseph Whitehead's opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1875 on the floor of the House of Representatives.
The bill guaranteed equal access to public places, and equal treatment, regardless of race or previous condition of servitude. Congressman Whitehead said the bill would infringe upon the rights of white people, if it passed.
During his speech Congressman Rainey said. “I cannot permit this opportunity to pass without a few words in reply to the gentleman from Virginia. I must say, judging from what I have heard, that the gentleman has made no argument, in my opinion, that can do the civil rights bill any harm. He has attempted to ridicule the same; he has attempted to ridicule the people whom it is designed to benefit.
But he has not adduced any strong argument, logical nor legal, why the bill should not pass and become a law or why the class of people against whom he has raised his opposing voice tonight should not have their constitutional rights. His premises are erroneous altogether, consequently his conclusions are fallacious and void of force.”
During his speech Congressman Cain said, “I have sat in this House nearly nine months, and I have listened to gentlemen recognize as the leaders on the other side attempting to demonstrate as they supposed the inferiority of a race of men whom they have so long outraged, and to cast a slur upon them because they have been helpless. But revolutions never go backward. The mills of the gods grind slowly, but surely and exceeding fine. The times have changed. The wheels have rolled up different circumstances from those that were rolled up in the days of the old regime.
The gentleman from Virginia calls in question the propriety of passing the civil-rights bill. I cannot agree with him, and for this reason; my understanding of human rights, of democracy if you please, is all rights to all men, the government of the people by the people, and for the people's interest, without regard to sections, complexions, or anything else."

Congressman John Roy Lynch
On February 3, 1875, Republican Congressman John Roy Lynch spoke in favor of the Civil Rights Act of 1875.
Congressman Lynch was born a slave in Louisiana. He represented Mississippi's 6th District and served in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Lynch was also the first black speaker of the Mississippi state house.
During his speech Congressman Lynch said, “It is not social rights that we desire. We have enough of that already. What we ask for is protection in the enjoyment of public rights…rights that are or should be accorded to every citizen alike.”
THANK YOU, WINSTON-SALEM FIRE FIGHTERS!
By Ken Raymond
Most people don’t have the courage to risk their lives to contain a massive fire that could potentially ignite 600 tons ammonium nitrate and help evacuate residents that live nearby. Most of us can’t even comprehend how much damage an explosion at the fertilizer plant would inflict upon our city.
But the members of the Winston-Salem Fire Department do, and the entire country is witnessing an incredible display of strength and courage from them.
The Forsyth County Republican Party would like to publicly acknowledge the bravery and professionalism of the WSFD during their on-going effort to control what is already being called the “the most dangerous fire in the city’s history” at the fertilizer plant on N. Cherry Street. Most of us will never know what you’re going through and the extremely dangerous situation you’re confronting as you fight to save our community.
Again, thank you for your courage. We’re praying for you.

1. We need volunteers who are willing to bake or purchase snacks and deliver them to a police station or fire station near them. Snack ideas include Valentine's cookies or cupcakes, granola bars, individual packages of crackers, small water bottles, etc.
2. If you don't have time to make a delivery but would like to purchase snacks or contribute money to buy snacks, that would be great! Please contact Targeted Outreach Committee Chair Colleen Lopina at [email protected] by February 9 if you can help in any way.
