FCGOP Celebrates Black History Month!!!

Throughout the month of February, the Forsyth County Republican Party is celebrating Black History Month by teaching historic truth about the connection between the black community and the Republican Party. This information is easily verified, but not taught in public schools for political reasons.

We’ll publish information about the role the GOP played, and continues to play, to establish freedom for black Americans.  And finally, we’ll also publish information about the courageous black republican congressmen, and state representatives, as they fought for equality, for newly freed slaves, against Democrat white supremacists and their allies in the Ku Klux Klan.

Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass speaks about blacks that fought in the American Revolution.

On July 4, 1875, Republican activist Frederick Douglass delivered a speech at the Independence Day celebration at Hillsdale.

About 23 years earlier, Douglass delivered a speech that asked the question, "What does the colored-man have to do with the 4th of July?" In THIS speech, he answered his own question.

During his speech Douglass said, "If any person should ask what the colored man has to do with the 4th of July, the answer is ready. They were at Lewisburg, Ticonderoga, Quebec, Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill. The manly form of Major Pitcairne was brought down by the musket of the colored soldier Peter Salem.

The colored man has much to do with the 4th of July."

NC Representative John Hyman from Warren County

In July of 1868, the North Carolina Republican Party won a majority in state legislature for the first time.

Among the new representatives were 20 black republicans. They were the first blacks elected to state office in North Carolina.

They included Senator Wilson Carey from Caswell County, and Senator's John Eagles and Abraham Galloway from from New Hanover County. Three of the house members were James H. Harris from Wake County, Thomas A. Sykes from Pasquotank County, and John A. Hyman from Warren County. John Hyman was also elected to Congress, in 1875, and was one of the founders of the North Carolina Republican Party.

 Congressman Robert Smalls

On May 13, 1862, Republican Congressman Robert Smalls led a crew of black sailors to commandeer a Confederate ammunition ship.

Smalls, who was born a slave, and the other black crewmen were forced to work for the Confederate Navy during the Civil War.

The ship, which was called The Planter, was anchored in Charleston harbor and loaded with a cargo of guns, cannons, and ammunition.  While the Confederate sailors were ashore, Smalls and the other black sailors rowed out to the ship, weighed anchor, and Smalls took the helm.

Smalls broke into the captains’ quarters and put on the captain’s dress uniform and strutted across the deck as they sailed past Fort Sumter and along the east coastline in the middle of the night.

Smalls and his crew sailed toward St. Helena Sound and turned over the ship, and its cargo, to a blockade of Union Navy ships positioned outside of Beaufort.

Smalls' actions were widely published in abolitionist newspapers, and he became big celebrity. After the Civil War, he was elected to Congress and served for three terms.
