CHAIRMAN'S CORNER

Ken Raymond, Chairman

Church and Family Reduce Crime, Not Vaccines

Recently, the City of Winston-Salem approved of a new crime prevention program called Cure Violence Global. According to the official website, the program’s purpose is to stop the spread of violent crime by thinking of it as a disease that requires a vaccination.

I’m not kidding. You can see it for yourself here. And this approach sounds eerily like the Tuskegee Experiment, which I reminded everyone about here.

The program itself was developed by an associate of the World Health Organization, Dr. Gary Slutkin. Sluttkin believes that health professionals should be used to prevent, treat, and control violence. Additionally, Dr. Slutkin believes that violence is transmitted through exposure and can be effectively treated using health methods. And the website does not clarify what they mean by “health methods.”

I have a lot to say about Cure Violence Global and what our elected officials are unleash upon the people of Winston-Salem, which I will say in future articles. But for now, I want to offer a solution to much of the cause of the growing level of crime in our country. Including gun violence, gang fights in schools, and violence in public places that’s happens not only in Winston-Salem, but everywhere.

First both parties, the American people, and their elected officials, must accept the fact that there are some things that government is completely powerless to handle and some things that are completely out of government’s jurisdiction. Would you ask a city bus driver to perform heart surgery? Or would you ask a waitress to represent you in criminal court?

And what happens if the bus driver agrees to perform the heart surgery and the waitress agrees to represent you before a judge because? And out of an overinflated sense of self-importance they proceed. And then you have a much bigger problem in the end.

Things that lead to much of society’s problems, including violence in schools, are found in the human heart and in character—nowhere else. That’s a place where government programs cannot reach. A government employee working as part of a program may care for the individuals they contact. But at the end of the day, they do what they do for a paycheck, nothing more. Would they do it free? No, they wouldn’t. They filled out the application and took the job to get a paycheck.

There are only two established institutions well equipped to reach the human heart: the family and the church. Local government cannot do this, and neither can state government. And certainly not the federal government.

Family and the church have the power to effectively address crime in our city and it is well within their jurisdiction. Change and adjustment of the human heart can only be addressed within the walls of a person’s home, or the consistent positive influence of individuals that are always trying to improve themselves such as the members of a church. That takes time, patience, effort, spirituality, continuous guidance, and personal connection. No government at any level can provide these things.

Police Department 911 operators routinely received calls from desperate parents asking for a police officer to come to their homes and help discipline their children. These parents have been conditioned to believe that the government can correct their kids so they can grow up and be good citizens. This is the equivalent to asking a bus driver performing heart surgery.

The officer, however, is completely powerless to give the parent the results they want. The officer may talk to the child for a few minutes, leave, and may never see the child again. The only thing the officer can do, that may make a temporary difference, is arrest the child and take him to jail. But that’s not what the parent wants. So, the parent is left with the same problem or worse.

And what’s even worse is that government officials believe they can raise the children of their constituents with government programs. Which is the equivalent of the waitress believing she represent someone before a judge.

To reduce crime in Winston-Salem several things need to happen: first, our elected officials must stop believing local government is the answer to all of society’s problem. Second, the people must accept the fact that the government is not the answer to all its problems. Third, individuals that constantly get into trouble must be influenced by friends and family members to make the profound changes that can only be achieved through Christ and the church. If these individuals put as much faith in the God as they do in the government, they may be pleasantly surprised. Fourth, parents must lead their children to take the same transformational steps that they’ve taken.

But sadly, our society has chosen to go in the opposite direction. For over 50 years, the only two institutions that can effectively deal with crime—the family and the church—have been under constant attack from cultural elites and the government. And over the years, those attacks have undermined both institutions and led to more crime.

And now our local government is offering the Cure Violence Global program as a solution to violence in Winston-Salem. I will provide more information about this program later, but for now suffice it to say that our local officials, as has our bus driver, has agreed to perform heart surgery it’s not qualified to perform.
