Running For

BOARD OF EDUCATION (AT-LARGE)

"I was born and raised in Clemmons. I'm a 1973 graduate of West Forsyth. I wrestled and played in the marching band all three years. I was inducted into National Honor Society, was an Honor Graduate, and received a full four-year academic scholarship to East Carolina University.

The primary reason I am running for a seat on the school board is to end the need for choice in our district. I don't disagree with parents having options, such as magnet schools, but there should not be one parent in the district who feels they need to send their child to a different school because they cannot get a quality education at their neighborhood school.

I am a strong supporter of the AIG program, but I have spoken against using the AIG program to mask failing schools, while doing nothing to raise the proficiency of the residential kids. I don't want to see the AIG program go away or get watered down. I want every child in the district to have the opportunity to achieve at their highest possible level.

I firmly believe that education is the only path to ending the historic poverty in our community. Without a well-educated population, companies will not locate in our community. Companies bring jobs, jobs bring opportunity, opportunity brings hope. Our young people need that hope for a brighter future. All of them.

I believe government, at all levels, has only three responsibilities: security, transportation, and education. Forsyth Co has done an exceptional job with the first two. However, our schools rank well below average in NC; and NC well-below average in the nation. By proficiency on standardized tests, WSFCS ranks as the worst performing large urban district in the state.

The only way we are going to raise the level of proficiency in WSFCS from below average to excellence is to hire and retain the very best educators; give them the human and financial resources they need; give them the time they need; and give them the autonomy they need to meet our students right where they are and get them to where they need to be.

"I am the original "BACK TO BASICS" candidate.  I am a WS/FCS graduate and father of three currently enrolled in the WS/FCS system.  I am a licensed Professional Engineer and problem solver.  I am a business man who manages multi-million projects.  My "BACK TO BASICS" platform will allow our students to SUCCEED!

Classroom Focus

  • Focus on math, science, social studies, English, foreign language, physical education and economics. Subjects should be taught without political agenda or bias.
  • Reduce the amount of screen time that students experience for school and homework.
  • Teach students to use reason and critical thought to make informed decisions for themselves.

Learn to value oneself, each other and our country

  • Encourage students to love themselves and to have a healthy and positive self-image.
  • Teach the value of service to others. Engage students in activities that enrich the lives of others in the community.
  • Teach students about American exceptionalism and why our country is unique.

Restore high expectations

  • Recognize that the world is competitive and prepare students to excel in the real world.
  • Prepare each student for a career or college immediately after high school.
  • Empower schools and administrators to enforce behavioral standards so that learning can be achieved without distractions.

Engage Families

  • Make curriculum and lesson materials easily available to parents online.
  • Encourage families to participate in their student’s education and support from home.
  • Recognize that parents and caregivers are able to make personal health decisions for their families.

Balance the budget

  • Bring peace of mind and stability to the teachers and staff so that they can focus on the students.
