This Week Is
Richard Dietz
Running For
NC SUPREME COURT ASSOCIATE JUSTICE - SEAT 03
Judge Dietz comes from a mountain family of railroad and telephone workers. From an early age, his parents encouraged him to study hard and to get an education. He succeeded, becoming the first in his family to attend college. He went on to graduate first in his class from Wake Forest University School of Law and later earned a master’s degree from Duke University School of Law.
As a lawyer, Judge Dietz became one of the most accomplished appellate advocates in North Carolina. He has personally argued in the U.S. Supreme Court—something only a handful of lawyers in the State have ever done—and is a board-certified specialist in appellate practice.
Before joining the Court of Appeals, Judge Dietz was a partner at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP, a 650-lawyer international law firm with its roots in North Carolina. He also served as a law clerk for two highly regarded federal judges—Judge Emory Widener on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and Judge Samuel Wilson on the U.S. District Court in Virginia.
Judge Dietz joined the Court of Appeals in 2014 and is now the third-most senior judge on the 15-member court. He has distinguished himself on the Court by writing thoughtful opinions that are concise and easy for the public to read and understand.
Judge Dietz is happily married to Kelley Dietz, who is both the love of his life and his most trusted advisor. Kelley is a former Capitol Hill staffer and political appointee who now works in higher education.
Judicial Philosophy: As a judge, he is committed to protecting our liberties and the rule of law.
VOTE RED IN 2022! VOTE DIETZ!

Also Being Featured This Week Is
Julee Flood
Running For
NC COURT OF APPEALS JUDGE - SEAT 08
Dr. Flood was born in Orlando, Florida to John M. and Dorothy Mills Tate. Her father grew up in a farming family in Western North Carolina, and her mother grew up in a farming family in Eastern North Carolina. With family roots extending across the state, Julee has had a lifelong love for North Carolina, calling it her “home” since 2003. Married in 1985 to her college sweetheart and best friend, Tim, they have four wonderful adult sons and four talented daughters-in-law (all graduates of North Carolina public higher education institutions and residents of Wake County), and four grandchildren. Julee cherishes family time and enjoys activities such as hiking, sailing, horseback riding, and Zumba. Julee and Tim have attended the Shepherd’s Church in Cary since 2003.
Throughout her career, Dr. Flood has gained diverse legal, business, and institutional experience. Julee is in-house counsel and advisor for a multi-state veterinary services business she co-founded with her husband. They are honored to employ over 50 people and strive to offer a great work environment for their team. She also serves as an attorney at the Court of Appeals, currently working for Judge Jeffery K. Carpenter. Julee has amassed extensive court experience, having analyzed and drafted hundreds of judicial opinions for nine appellate judges and justices in federal and state courts. One of Julee’s greatest joys is teaching. She previously taught at Elon Law in a Fellowship and then as Visiting Professor of Law and Director of the Leadership Program. She has also been an adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee’s College of Law and College of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, and at Duke University’s Paralegal Program.
Judicial Philosophy: Dr. Flood believes fairness is achieved through a judicial philosophy rooted in judicial restraint and consistency in the law. She is dedicated to: 1) Upholding our State and Federal Constitutions by adhering to the language of the State and Federal Constitutions as originally written and understood, 2) Following the rule of law by adhering to the language of the law as enacted by legislative bodies, agreed to by parties, or ruled upon in precedent, and 3) Delivering justice for all by acting with dignity and professionalism, treating everyone who comes before the Court with respect, ruling on cases promptly, and promoting equal justice under the law.
